 VoIP Telephone Services

Although Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) seems to be a relatively new technology, it has been around since 1975. The idea of using computers and computer networks  to send voice transmissions has been in development for a long time.

Its only in recent times, with the advancement of "Broadband Internet" that VoIP has become a viable alternative to our familiar Plain Old Telephone Service (P.O.T.S.).
If you have made a call with a calling card then chances are you have used VoIP without even knowing it. VoIP has been used in big business for some time now and with its popularity,
more manufactures are producing equipment to take advantage of the fast growing market. With the cost of equipment now at affordable prices, VoIP and all its benefits is now within easy reach of not only small business but the home user as well.

So what is this VoIP stuff and how can I use it?
Well you can try our Glossary for starters, but here is our spin on it:
Put simply, you make phone calls using your broadband internet connection instead of your traditional Plain Old Telephone System (P.O.T.S.) that your phone company supplies you. There are several ways to make VoIP calls. The most basic way is from computer to computer using software called soft phones. Sign up for a VoIP account, install the software and configure it with your account details.
It is advisable to use headphones with a microphone plugged into your computer. With a free VoIP account you will be able to call other users with a VoIP account. If you upgrade your VoIP account to a calling account, you will be able to call any telephone number in the world as you do with the traditional P.O.T.S. You can get a copy of our softphone for windows here or Mac here or Linux here, then contact us for a free account to start talking.

If your not the computer savvy type or just find using a computer is not ideal for making phone calls, there are alternatives. There are many brands and styles of IP phones on the market. These devices look and work in a similar fashion to your old phone, the difference is these IP phones plug into your network like a computer and not your Plain Old Telephone Service (P.O.T.S.). This allows you to have a phone anywhere you have a LAN connection.

As pictured (left) IP phones look,  feel and function like a traditional business phone.   When only one phone is required, the IP phone connects through your router to a service provider. The service provider then supplies the connection to the P.O.T.S.

The newest devices on the market allow you to use your existing phone. The Analogue Telephone Adaptor (ATA) acts as a bridge between your telephone and your internet. The ATA plugs into your Local Area Network (LAN) like your computer does, then you plug your current telephone and use it as you normally did.

Some ATA's have the option to connect your P.O.T.S. as pictured (left).     Some ATA's have a FXO port which allow you to plug in your P.O.T.S. for automatic fallback if your internet connection fails. This means you can make calls via the internet using VoIP or via Telstra / Optus. You can setup the ATA to receive calls on your old phone number using the FXO port and make calls using VoIP through the internet. Using an ATA is the best of both the old and the new.

For the SOHO or SME you can now sound more professional and handle calls more efficiently like the big corporations with a computer based IP-PBX system. IP-PBX systems can be tailored to suit your individual requirements, with features such as an IVR system, voice mail, call queues, ring groups. The IP-PBX can be connected to your existing ISDN or PSTN telephone lines and/or be connected via VoIP using your broadband internet connection. Additional features such as remote extensions anywhere in the world and easy upgrade path make our IP-PBX stand out from the traditional PABX systems. It doesn't matter how large or small you are we can setup an IP-PBX to suit your budget and requirements.
